Payroll is the part of the ERP that every employee notices. If salaries are late or a tax deduction looks wrong, the whole team knows by lunchtime. Odoo payroll in Pakistan can run a clean monthly cycle, from attendance to payslip to bank payment, but only if it is configured for how Pakistani payroll actually works: income tax withholding, EOBI, overtime, allowances and the occasional adjustment. This guide covers what to set up and where businesses usually go wrong.
What Pakistani payroll needs from an ERP
A payroll set-up that fits Pakistan has to handle more than basic salary minus tax. In practice, most companies need:
- Salary income tax withholding calculated from the slabs the FBR publishes each year, including mid-year corrections when an employee's income changes.
- EOBI contributions for employer and employee, plus any provident fund your company runs.
- Allowances and deductions such as house rent, medical, conveyance, loan instalments and advances.
- Overtime and weekend pay tied to real attendance records, not typed in by hand.
- Accounting entries that post to salaries payable and withholding tax payable, so payroll lands in your books without manual journals.
Tax slabs, EOBI limits and minimum wage change with the federal budget and provincial notifications. Treat every rate in your system as a setting someone owns and reviews, and confirm current figures with FBR or your tax advisor.
How Odoo payroll is structured
Odoo Payroll is built around salary structures and salary rules. A structure is the list of rules that make up a payslip: basic pay, allowances, overtime, tax, EOBI and net salary. Each rule has a code, a calculation and, importantly, optional debit and credit accounts. For Pakistan you normally build one structure for regular staff and add rules for the items above rather than editing Odoo's generic ones in place. There are also community and third-party Pakistan payroll modules on the Odoo app store; they are a useful starting point, but check that they are maintained for your Odoo version before you rely on one.
Connecting attendance, leave and payroll
The biggest time saver is letting attendance and time off flow into the payslip. Overtime is computed from attendance, unpaid leave reduces pay automatically, and HR no longer rebuilds the month in a spreadsheet. If you use biometric or face-based attendance, it is worth testing that data end to end before the first live payroll run.
Accounting: the part people skip
Payroll that does not post correctly to accounting creates a second, hidden job for the finance team. Set the debit and credit accounts on each rule at the start: salary expense on the debit side, salaries payable and withholding tax payable on the credit side. Then test the full chain on a sample payslip: validate it, post the journal entry, register the payment and confirm the payable clears. Tax adjustments deserve their own test, because a payslip with a withholding correction behaves differently from a plain one when you register payment.
Common mistakes we see
- Hard-coding tax slabs inside rules with no plan for the next budget.
- Leaving the accounting fields on salary rules empty, then discovering it when the first payment fails.
- Running parallel payroll in Excel "just in case" for months, which means the Odoo numbers never get trusted.
- Skipping a dry run with last month's real data before going live.
Get payroll right with a local Odoo partner
We run payroll on Odoo ourselves, and we set it up for clients as part of Odoo implementation in Pakistan. When a business needs a rule or report that standard Odoo does not cover, our team writes custom Odoo modules for it. See how we use the platform internally on the case studies page, or read our guide to FBR digital invoicing in Odoo.
